I am in awe, and honored you are using my font!
Hej Newton! Jag visste att jag glömde någonting. I just thought about the font a couple of days ago. I used it quite a lot and it became my default font back in the days. Thanks a lot and belated credits to you, Newton, for the nice work; better late than never 🙂
Much obliged 🙂 and great work!
@Zebpro: Definitely 😉 @WayneK: It uses Blitter lines and a font whose chars can be filled with the Blitter. (The old shut down and restoration of the system is a bit buggy and this or the other absolute address is being used. I haven’t fixed that and couple of other things. Sorry for that.) @SToRM: Yeah, Jackal’s / Chris’s star wars scroller is great though he is using a different approach / technique. As far as I remember he mentioned something like that many, many bobs had been used?! @Annatar: It was never used in an intro. It’s exclusively for… Read more »
@ROG Jackal called that part of the SToRM mini megademo: “blitter torture”
here’s some more information about “blitter torture” included in the credits part:
“this production took about 2 weeks to run without crashing every 5 minutes.the sound came out to cut down the blitter operations .. so i decided to use the processor instead. Soon coming an atari st version.”
Didn’t Chaos/Sanity also do a CPU-only version of his starwars scroller, I think released in some Atari ST megademo? So there are at least 2 versions done without blitter…
Then the title “Processor Torture” would be more appropriate 😉 I rewatched Jackal’s scroller and thought about how it was realized. I presume – with having his mentioned 400 bobs with a height of 8px in the back of my mind – that he is using pre-shrinked (=different width) chars. And for every new line of the scroller that appears on the screen a pool of shrinked copies (maybe 400:20=20) is generated with help of those different sized chars and stored in memory for their subsequent use. This approach could also easily be rewritten for the processor, though 400 objects… Read more »
The next level is doing real 3D texture mapping, so that any font can be used and the text scrolled at any angle. It’s on my to do list for someday. All in good fun and for the joy of a challenge.
Nice to have, thanks! 😉
I love starwars scrollers, this looks great. I’m not sure I know 100% how it’s done, I’ll probably take a look at the source code later 🙂
cool stuff, reminds me of the one used in the SToRM mini megademo

Very nice Rog, very nice indeed. Was this used in any intro?
