The excitement of getting a big game to work partially (i assume this was a fairly big release?) makes it really tempting to put it out and hope there’s nothing else going on i guess.. plus prehaps a lot of the lesser skilled crackers of the time were possibly not experienced coders and simply using knowledge gained from looking at cracks in the past and copying the methods. That’s just my thoughts though having not been involved anywhere near the same time. It seemed like possibly ‘100%’ or 101% (lol) late cracks were more accepted in the C64 days? Ideally… Read more »
I’ve only had a look at it for 20 minutes or so, and i’m REALLY surprised that Blackhawk was caught out by some of Mr.E’s copy protection. For instance, the reason why the password menu doesn’t work is rather easy to spot. In the boot routine, a word is set at address $4 after all the AmigaDOS stuff is finished with, the game later checks this word by extracting it to D0, subtracting $f7 from it (which coincidentally is the value of the word at $4), and then subtracts the contents of D0 from an address in the password processing… Read more »
Unsure of what WayneK meant by "wof" though… Wings of Fury was released in 1989 and Mr. E claims in a scene interview that he entered the games industry in 1991… hmmmm
Ok – a lot of comments and about 2 years went by. Did anyone crack it properly? Maybe a good idea for an interactive tutorial? Sting has a go at it and Mr.E corrects/redirects if&when needed 🙂
This is why I love this site! LOL! Where else can you read conversations like this one? This is absolutely perfect. hehehehhe an ex-cracker gets his own game cracked and then discusses it with fellow ex crackers 🙂
This is hilarious stuff. I am so glad this site exists, it brings back all the old memories from the 80s and 90s and the wonderful amiga, not to mention all my bbs adventures 🙂
Go for it Would be interesting to see how you got on.
I will have a look for sure since I’d like to see how you spread the protection all over the place and stuff. 🙂 Btw, you might remember your Lotus 1 crack, I learned a lot from it, I hacked it down to pieces back in 1990 since I was fascinated by the fileloader. 🙂
Wayne Kerr: I still remember the time pressure back in the days. Still, that’s no excuse for me to completely fuck up a crack. And BH was a master of non/half working cracks. 🙂 All groups had quite some time pressure, still, as Mr.E already said, some still managed to do their cracks properly. (N.o.m.a.d., Gaston, Mok :D)
WayneK: It’s easy to criticise crackers for making mistakes, but it’s important to understand the time pressure they were usually under to finish/release a crack in the good old days of the scene. There’s always a better way to do something if you have the luxury of time to sit and think about it, but when every minute counted, rigorous testing was often first to be thrown aside, and "cheap tricks" were used to bypass protections faster… A lot of the pressure was caused if we’d heard that another group had the same original.. or having to go to work… Read more »

I saw someone did a whdload version which he claimed was 100% but I never
bothered checking it out. He said it took him 5 days to crack it.
Its quite funny looking around the net seeing people saying their passwords for the game don’t work.. or they can’t kill certain monsters.. thats all down to the protection.. lol

Mr.E: A pity he left most of the protection intact Haha, no wonder, it was Blackhawk. 😀 I remember him for mostly f*cked up cracks. 🙂 Best "crack" I’ve seen by him was the one for a german Adventuregame by Software 2000 called Jonathan. Pretty nice game and impossible to finish using BH’s "crack". I laughed my ass off when I saw his approach to "crack" this game. 😀 Till now I didn’t see a 1oo% version of that game except my own one, too bad I never released it. 🙂 Would be interesting to look at JP now since… Read more »
We also produced a CD32 version which was never released. This used amigados for loading and is o/s friendly and has no protection. Think I still have this on backup somewhere.. Might look it out one of these days…
Cheers
I always wanted to ask an ex cracker what does it feel like to have your own game cracked
good question… it happens.. not a lot you can do about it…
Saying that I really went to town with the protection on JP.. All the versions i’ve seen out there are totally knackered/unplayable.

It was originally actually! Got canned though
Hehe… and no, "wof" in this case doesn’t refer to Wings of Fury 🙂 In fact, it wasn’t an Amiga game at all, was it Mr.E? 🙂
Well done Sherlock :/
Mr. E = Robert Walker
Oh, the joys of the internet…
Unsure of what WayneK meant by "wof" though… Wings of Fury was released in 1989 and Mr. E claims in a scene interview that he entered the games industry in 1991… hmmmm
waynek: wings of fury?
stingray: i’d like to have your 100% version of jonathan
Ok – a lot of comments and about 2 years went by. Did anyone crack it properly? Maybe a good idea for an interactive tutorial? Sting has a go at it and Mr.E corrects/redirects if&when needed 🙂
If someone gets me the IPF files, I’ll see just how tricky this protection is 😉
For THOSE who want to know,
MR.E has even BURIED a cheat mode inside the code, it’s clearly written. For that deRNC all game
files ^^ !
Do you confirm my discover Mr.E?
So, did anyone actually crack JP 100% by now?

Uhh, sounds interesting!
Is there more than the PDOS disk format, copylocks & checksums ?
Oh yes.. and more…
I think its up in my loft.. I’ve got stacks of disks including a whole quarterdeck backup of my dev amiga.. unfortunately not got an amiga anymore
It’s full of checksums, right ?
Did you ever find that CD32 version?
good question… it happens.. not a lot you can do about it…
Saying that I really went to town with the protection on JP.. All the versions i’ve seen out there are totally knackered/unplayable.
Bugger… didn’t think anyone knew about that one :cry
I always wanted to ask an ex cracker what does it feel like to have your own game cracked 🙂
Mr.E coded the game, he’s not bluffing you… one of the more popular games he was involved with (*cough* "WoF" *cough*) 🙂
A pity he left most of the protection intact 😀
